As we commemorate Women’s History Month, we reflect on the remarkable contributions of women throughout history and celebrate the progress made toward gender equality in various fields. From the invention of the paper coffee filter by Amalie Auguste Melitta Bentz to Erna Knutsen, a veteran trader and coffee maven, who is credited with coining the phrase specialty coffee, women have played a significant role in shaping the narrative of coffee cultivation and consumption.

At Farmer Brothers, we take pride in acknowledging the invaluable contributions of women at every step of our journey. This March, we are shining a spotlight on the remarkable women who are an integral part of our coffee supply chain from bean to cup and are incredibly proud of the women who have helped lead, shape and drive Farmer Brothers’ success over the last 112 years.

We are also incredibly proud to empower and support women-owned businesses and farms around the world as our commitment to sourcing premium coffee beans extends beyond quality and taste. One such group is JNP Coffee, which is owned and operated by Jeanine Niyonzima, and the Turihamwe group in Burundi, from whom we procure premium coffee beans for our esteemed client, Nordstrom. In total, 13 women have directly benefited from this direct partnership, with approximately 50 – 55 individuals, including their family members, experiencing the positive ripple effects of our collaboration.

The premium allocated from the sale of Nordstrom’s coffee has been instrumental in facilitating various aspects of these women’s lives and livelihoods. From loan repayment to equipment purchases, personal savings and reinvestment in the new harvest, this financial support has empowered the women of the Turihamwe group to achieve greater self-reliance, while supporting their families and helping grow their communities.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we want to acknowledge and thank these women and those within our own organization. From roasters to saleswomen, and every role in between, their contribution has always been invaluable to the success and growth of Farmer Brothers. Their talent, dedication and passion fuel our mission to provide extraordinary products and unparalleled value to our customers across the country.
